"Les misérables", a review

Les Misérables”, a review

Juan José Angulo de la Calle

The book was written by Victor Hugo in 1862. It is set in the Kingdom of France from 1815 to 1832.

The book is about an strong and complex man, Jean Valjean, who stole a bar of bread and, as a result, he staid in jail for 22 years. When he was free, he wanted reveange against humanity and he stole two candelabras made of silver. He was forgiven but he had to do a promise: he had to be a good man. As a consequence, he tried to be a honest man, he built a factory, he helped a poor woman and he protected her daughter when she died.

But when the girl grow up, he was jealous of her fiancé, a republican revolutionaire. He tried to separate them and, because of that, the young republican fougth in the Revolution of 1831. In the end, Jean Valjean saved the young revolutionaire and the couple got married.

I strongly recommend Les Misérables. It describes social injusticies, social fights, the condition of the workers and the difficulties of the virtue.
